The Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple is a special place for people who follow the Hindu religion, dedicated to the elephant-headed god, Ganesha. It’s located on Ceylon Road and has a story that goes back to the mid-19th century, started by Tamil people from Sri Lanka. This temple became even more special on February 7, 2003, when it was recognized as a historic site. The story of the temple is quite fascinating. It began when a stone statue of Ganesha, also known as Vinayaka or Vinayagar, was found near the shore, next to a tree known as senpaga or chempaka. Tamil workers and a well-known person from the Sri Lankan Tamil community, Ethirnayagam Pillay, placed the statue under this tree in the 1850s. Because the statue was found next to a senpaga tree, they named the temple Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple. At first, the statue was kept under a simple shelter made of leaves, but in 1913, the community bought land and built a proper shelter for the statue, hired a priest, and made the temple a holy place.
