Shree Mahaganapati Temple in Khandola, Goa, stands as a testament to resilience and devotion, being one of the oldest and most revered Lord Ganesha temples in the region. Dedicated to the Hindu God of wisdom and prosperity, the temple has a rich history that unfolds through various relocations prompted by invasions and religious persecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 13th century, during the Muslim invasion in Goa, the original temple in Ella was destroyed. The sacred idols of Maha Ganapati were then moved to Navelim and Goltim, and later found a temporary home on the island of Diwar. However, in 1541-45 AD, Portuguese missionaries vandalized the temple, forcing devotees to transport the idols to Khandepar and eventually to their present abode in Khandola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shifting landscapes of the temple’s history reveal the challenges faced by its devotees. Temples on Diwar were pulled down by the Portuguese in 1540 AD, and the forced conversions in 1541-45 AD led to further migrations to protect the deities from desecration. The temple in Khandepar fell into ruins, leaving behind remnants like an exposed laterite plinth and column bases of the Sabhamandap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite these tribulations, the devotees’ commitment remained unwavering. The temple in Khandola was established, and a new idol of Shri Ganpati was consecrated in 1969 AD. Notably, the ancient idol, dating back to the 13th century AD, was preserved beside the new one, embodying a fusion of history and tradition. The sculpture, showcasing influences of Kadamb-Hoysala art, portrays a Chatur Bhuj Lord Ganesha, symbolizing divine protection and auspiciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
