Introduction

Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanam, affectionately known as the Ganesha Temple, stands proudly as one of the oldest Hindu temples in Queens, New York. Established in 1970 by the Hindu Temple Society of North America, this sacred space is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the revered Hindu deity symbolizing wisdom, success, and the removal of obstacles. The temple’s history unfolds with the acquisition of a site from a former Russian Orthodox Church, leading to the construction of a magnificent temple designed in accordance with ancient scriptures on temple building.

Managed by the nonprofit organization, the Hindu Temple Society of North America, the Ganesha Temple was founded on January 26, 1970, under the laws of the State of New York. Initially conducting daily rituals and weekend services in a small frame house obtained from a non-functioning Russian Orthodox Church, the temple underwent a transformative phase in 1977. A new structure, aligned with the Agama Sastras, was completed, and on July 4 of the same year, the temple was consecrated, coinciding with the US Independence Day. This auspicious occasion also marked the installation of twenty-six blessed yantras prepared by the esteemed Sri La Sri Pandrimalai Swamigal, a siddha from Madras, over a period of five years.
