Kamal Binayak Temple, Bhaktapur, Nepal

Introduction

Kamal Binayak Temple (also spelled as Kamal Vinayaka Temple), also known as “कमल विनायक गणेश मन्दिर,” is a venerable Lord Ganesha temple located in the historic city of Bhaktapur, Nepal. Dedicated to the Hindu God Lord Ganesha, the temple has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Renowned among the local Newar community as “Yatu Ganesh,” Kamal Binayak holds a special significance in the cultural and religious fabric of the region.

The temple derives its name from two distinct words: “Kamal,” meaning lotus flower, which thrives in the adjacent pond, and “Binayak” (or “Vinayaka”) one of 108 names of Lord Ganesha. The local Newar residents affectionately refer to this sacred site as “Yatu Ganesh,” signifying its location below the hill, adjacent to the pond. An interesting belief associated with the temple is that children who face delays in breaking their silence and speaking are encouraged to cry within the temple premises, as it is believed that this ritual will hasten their ability to start speaking.

Despite being an ancient structure, Kamal Binayak Temple underwent significant renovations in 2010, emphasizing the commitment to preserving its historical and cultural heritage. It stands as a testament to the enduring reverence for Lord Ganesha in the hearts of the people of Bhaktapur. Notably, Kamal Binayak is sometimes confused with other popular Ganesh shrines, such as Ashok Binayak, Chandra Binayak, Surya Binayak, and Jal Binayak, adding to the tapestry of religious landmarks in the region.
