Introduction

Vakratunda Mahakaya (वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय) is the best-known prayer to Lord Ganesha. In two short lines it asks him, the Remover of Obstacles, to keep every undertaking free of obstacles. Hindus everywhere recite it before beginning anything new: a puja, a day of study, a journey, a business, a marriage.

It is a shloka, a verse, rather than a bija mantra like Om Gam Ganapataye Namah. Its words are a prayer anyone can understand once they know what each one means.

The Shloka

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarvakaryeshu Sarvada

In English: “O Lord of the curved trunk and mighty body, whose radiance equals ten million suns: O God, make all my undertakings free of obstacles, always.”

Word-by-Word Meaning

Sanskrit Transliteration Meaning
वक्रतुण्ड vakratunda of the curved (vakra) trunk (tunda)
महाकाय mahakaya of the great (maha) body (kaya)
सूर्यकोटि suryakoti ten million (koti) suns (surya)
समप्रभ samaprabha equal (sama) in radiance (prabha)
निर्विघ्नं nirvighnam free of obstacles (vighna)
कुरु kuru make
मे me for me
देव deva O God
सर्वकार्येषु sarvakaryeshu in all (sarva) undertakings (karya)
सर्वदा sarvada always

The first line praises Ganesha’s form: the curved trunk, the vast body, a brilliance beyond counting. The second line is the prayer itself, and it asks for one thing only, that nothing should stand in the way of the work ahead.

Why “Vakratunda”?

Vakratunda, “the one with the curved trunk,” is one of Ganesha’s best-known names, and the first of the twelve names in the Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotra recited on Sankashti Chaturthi. The Mudgala Purana names eight forms of Ganesha that each overcome a human weakness, and among them, Vakratunda is the vanquisher of matsarya, jealousy, as the book Loving Ganesha tells in Forms of Ganesha.

The same name opens the Ganesh Gayatri Mantra, vakratundaya dhimahi, “we meditate on the one with the curved trunk.”

When Is It Chanted?

Ganesha is worshipped first, before every other God and before every beginning, and this verse is how most people do it. It is recited:

  • at the start of a puja, before any other Deity is invoked
  • before study or an examination
  • before a journey, a new job, or opening a business
  • at weddings and other family ceremonies
  • each morning, to begin the day

How to Chant It

Once, said with attention, is enough before a task. Many people also use it for japa, repetition, counting on a mala of 108 beads. The book Loving Ganesha advises, in Mantra Recitation, to bathe or wash before sitting, to breathe slowly for a few moments first, and to chant at the same time each day.

Hold Ganesha’s image in your mind as you say the first line, and the work you are about to begin as you say the second.

Conclusion

Vakratunda Mahakaya is a short prayer with a single request. It praises Ganesha’s curved trunk, his great body and his brilliance of ten million suns, and asks him to keep all our undertakings free of obstacles, always.
